LASIK Xtra

What is LASIK Xtra?

LASIK Xtra is an exciting new treatment that allows more people to be suitable for LASIK than ever before. Have you been told you aren’t suitable for LASIK due to thin or abnormal corneas, or your refractive error is too high?

LASIK Xtra is a simple treatment performed in conjunction with LASIK to add biomechanical strength to your cornea.  This treatment is more commonly suggested for people with highly short-sighted or astigmatic prescriptions, in order to improve the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

LASIK Xtra adds just a few extra minutes to the LASIK treatment. In this treatment, riboflavin (vitamin B) eye drops are soaked into the corneas followed by shining Ultraviolet A (UVA) light of a precise wavelength and energy for 1 minute. This has the effect of strengthening the cornea.

This UV treatment is also called corneal cross-linking and is used in the treatment of certain diseases of the cornea, such as keratoconus.

Ultraviolet A (UVA) is one of the three types of invisible light rays given off by the sun (together with UVB and UVC).
