Multifocal Lens Implants

WHAT ARE MULTIFOCIAL LENS IMPLANTS?

Multifocal Lens Implants

Multifocal lens implants are advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs) designed to replace the natural lens of the eye, usually during cataract surgery or a refractive lens exchange. Unlike standard monofocal lenses that focus at one distance, multifocal lenses can provide clear vision at multiple distances – near, intermediate and far – and aims to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

How Do They Work?

Multifocal lenses use innovative optical technology to split incoming light into different focal points within the eye. This allows your eyes to adjust seamlessly between everyday tasks, from reading a book to driving at night. The result is greater visual independence and improved quality of life. Book an appointment with Dr Phillip McGeorge to find out whether you’re an ideal candidate for this type of surgery.

Benefits of Multifocal Lens Implants

01

Enjoy clear vision at all distances and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and contacts.

02

The procedure is minimally invasive, keeping you comfortable with local anaesthetic eye drops and a fast recovery, often seeing clearly within days.

03

The lens implants are permanent, and the results are long-lasting, into old age, giving you vision without the need for additional corrective spectacle lenses for most tasks.

04

Fine adjustments can still be made in the future if your vision requirements change, ensuring your eyes continue to see clearly and comfortably over time.

05

Multifocal Lens Surgery is suitable for a wide range of prescriptions, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, offering personalised treatment tailored to your unique eye needs.

Is a Multifocal Lens Right for You?

Not everyone is suited to a multifocal lens implant. Factors such as eye health, lifestyle, night driving requirements and personal vision goals all need to be carefully considered. During your consultation, Dr Phillip McGeorge will thoroughly assess your suitability and explain the lens options best suited to your needs.

Who is a good candidate for multifocal lens implants?

Usually people over 45, seeking improved distance and near vision and want greater independence from glasses are good candidates, provided their eyes are otherwise healthy. Typically, they are undergoing cataract surgery or choose refractive lens exchange over laser.

Unfortunately, the Federal Government has determined that refractive eye surgery will not be covered by Medicare as it is considered a lifestyle surgery unless cataract is present. Multifocal lens implants are covered when cataract is present. This cover varies depending on your level of insurance, including Bupa, Medibank, AHM, Defence Health, Navy Health and HBF.

There is also the option to pay for your own treatment, and we provide finance options for those that may require that.
