WHAT IS MONOVISION LASER EYE SURGERY?
Monovision
Monovision may be a good option for patients aged 45 and over, who may feel frustrated with wearing reading glasses and age-related decline in vision (presbyopia).
There is no way of providing the youthful vigor back to your eyes, and some degree of compromise will always be required. Other treatments also exist to help those not suited to monovision.
Monovision is a treatment solution for Presbyopia – the lack of ability of the eye’s lens to change shape to focus on nearby objects or written text. Presbyopia occurs as a natural decline in reading vision, most often experienced by people aged 45 and over.
In Monovision, the two eyes are set slightly differently with one eye set for distance and the other set for near. The eyes work through the brain swapping seamlessly between the two to give improvement at distance and near.
A large factor in the success of Monovision patients is the ability of the brain to adjust to this new way of seeing objects near and far. The adjustment process may take a few days or weeks, or may not feel right for you at all.
At Perth Laser Vision you will be assessed for suitability.

FAQs
Is Monovision surgery painful?
No, the procedure itself is not painful. Anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eyes, so you may only feel some mild pressure during treatment. After surgery, it’s common to experience temporary discomfort such as dryness, grittiness, or light sensitivity, but this usually settles within a few days as the eyes heal.
Am I a good candidate for Monovision?
Monovision is often recommended for people aged 45 or over who are struggling with age-related near vision decline (presbyopia). During your consultation, Dr Phillip McGeorge will assess your eyes, your dominance, visual needs, and lifestyle, to decide if Monovision is a suitable option.
When will I notice improved vision?
Most patients notice improved vision within a few days after surgery, once the eyes begin to heal. However, because Monovision requires your brain to adapt to using one eye for distance and the other for near, it can take several weeks for your vision to feel completely natural. Some people adjust almost immediately, while others need a little more time.
Is laser eye surgery covered by Medicare?
Unfortunately, the Federal Government has determined that laser eye surgery will not be covered by Medicare as it is considered lifestyle surgery. It is covered to a variable extent by some private health insurances, including Bupa, Medibank, AHM, Defence Health, Navy Health and HBF. We also provide finance options.
How much is laser eye surgery?
As every eye is unique, the extent of your surgery requirements will determine your exact costs. After an assessment to determine your needs, we will provide you with a quote for surgery. An initial assessment including refraction and consultation costs $200. A referral is not necessary, but Medicare will provide a higher rebate ($84.15) if you obtain a referral from your GP or an optometrist. If no written referral is provided, Medicare will only provide a rebate of around $21.00 on consultations. At Perth Laser Vision, laser eye surgery generally costs around $6,900 for both eyes. Most private health funds do not cover laser eye surgery. It’s best to check directly with your health fund.
