Can I Claim Laser Eye Surgery on My Private Health Insurance?

Can I Claim Laser Eye Surgery on My Private Health Insurance?
The cost of laser eye surgery is a significant amount for the average household budget. As such, most people who visit Perth Laser Vision enquire whether part of the cost can be covered by their private health insurance. Generally, this sort of surgery is classified as “lifestyle” surgery by health funds and is not covered except in certain circumstances.

What health funds cover laser eye surgery?
The good news is that several health funds are now covering some of the cost of laser eye surgery. This makes the benefits of this procedure more accessible to patients who wish to stop being reliant on glasses or contact lenses.

BUPA: This health fund covers 100% of the laser eye surgery’s cost for those who hold their premium hospital and extras cover called Bupa Ultimate. This funding also covers the cost of the consultation at Perth Laser Vision. There is a 36 month waiting period for laser eye surgery benefits.

Lens surgery is fully covered under Top hospital cover when covered by Medicare also.

Dr McGeorge is a registered BUPA provider and accepts this payment as full cover.

The Hospital Benefit Fund Ultimate Cover which previously covered laser eye surgery is no longer available. HBF also cover intra ocular surgery and keratoconus cross linking. Dr McGeorge provides the specialized lens surgery procedures covered by HBF Silver and Gold cover.  Multifocal, toric or other lens procedures are covered by this in older patients with cataracts.

There is a 12 month waiting period.

Medibank Private:
Medibank Ultra Cover will pay $3,500 towards Laser Eye Surgery.  Medibank only pays benefits towards laser eye surgery under Ultra Health Cover and this is subject to a lifetime limit and a 36-month waiting period.

Australian Health Management happens to be a branch of Medibank Private and offers a contribution to costs for members who hold their Lifestyle Extras ($600 per person) or Super Extras cover ($900 per person). This cover has a two year waiting period and a lifetime limit.

Defence Health:
This health fund offers rebates for laser eye surgery to those who hold specific plans that have this particular procedure included in their package.

This health fund information is correct at the time of writing. It would be wise to contact your fund personally to check your cover. Perth Laser Vision also provides finance for laser eye surgery which would be useful if your health fund does not provide cover. For more information please call us on 9218 7666.
